TWIN VOICES A Memoir of Polio, the Forgotten Killer by: Janice Flood Nichols Twin Voices, by Janice Flood Nichols, provides a unique and timely glimpse into polio, a virus that killed and maimed millions of children and adults during the twentieth century.
In 1953, polio struck DeWitt, NY (an eastern suburb of Syracuse) with a vengeance. In a first grade class of twenty-four students, eight children contracted the disease – one child, Frank Flood Jr., died sixty-one hours after admission to City Hospital; another first grader and her older sister died several years later of complications. Frankie’s twin sister, Janice, was admitted to the hospital on the evening of his burial. Diagnosed with paralytic polio, Janice recovered. She participated in the 1954 Salk vaccine trial, as one of nearly two million “Polio Pioneers.” Today, she remains dedicated to the goal of worldwide polio eradication. Twin Voices tells the story of polio, the disease, and the story of one family’s bout with the killer, in multiple “voices.”
Although the number of worldwide polio cases has dropped from 350,000 in 1988 to 1997 in 2006 and 1303 in 2007, polio eradication remains an elusive, but important, international public health endeavor. Unfortunately, current funding gaps experienced by eradication partners threaten eradication efforts. It is now estimated that if polio is not eradicated, over ten million more children will be paralyzed by 2040.

ONE SMALL GROUP IN JACKSONVILLE
How can we even tell you to make you understand, Our daily trial's and hardship's for they go hand and hand.
Although we struggle with daily pain and ask each other why, The only answer that we can get, comes from beyond the sky......

So often we forget to give thanks while we are in such pain, So often we try to beat it "but" our attempts are in vain.....
You see, we need your help dear friends to spread our words world wide, so doctor's can hear our message and come over to our side.

By STEPHEN KINDLAND
Sports editor
Not even a severe asthma attack could stop Stuart Caplin from claiming
his second national table tennis title this year, but the Orange Park man's
valiant effort last weekend left him wondering if he'll be able to compete in
next week's Pan-Am wheelchair games in Argentina.

My passion is graphic designing. That is one of the things I liked best about working for Watson
Realty. Working with a Realtor was interesting. But doing all their marketing from designing
personal cards or fliers for their listing was what I loved best. I also designed their business cards.
You have probably seen several logo advertisements on the side of a Realtor car that I have
designed. I designed a brochure for my sons wedding in December 2008.
Now that I am retired from working in the work place I find things to do for my family and friends.
Designing birthday cards to making little memento's to give them pleasure. I have made quilts,
dolls, etc.
My cousin says she enjoys getting a homemade card better than the generic ones. Putting your
special touch on anything and passing it along to a family member or friend is so rewarding. I
have even tried my hand at writing and laid it aside for awhile. I do so love to read and paint.
I love going to church and sharing in fellowship with my friends. But most of all I love to sing my
praises to God I have recently joined a church choir and love singing with them..
I sing around the house to most any music. The fifties and sixties along with any relaxing music I
find enjoyable.
However the love of my life here on this earth is my grandchildren. Peyton is now 16 and Jared is
7. They make me laugh and I enjoy spending time with them.
Your Friend, Janice Askwith

My granddaughter Peyton and my mother Bernetta Both have helped the group with seating and serving at our meetings.
