Day at the Beach!
Fernandina Beach and Ft Clinch
For us that live in Florida the weather should be
something to shout about. I learned to appreciate
it all over again when my sister Pam and her
husband Gordon came for a visit from Ohio. They enjoyed the sunshine and warm weather. They were here the last of
January and early February.
I did not think I could get over the soft sand as I have told you before how difficult it could be for me. However my sister
and I took our time and I went down the hill at a angle and I came up it the same way. I used both crutches instead of one
which helped to balance me. The climb back up was the hardest but worth it. I totally enjoyed walking on the hard sand and
looking for shells. My husband Regan and Gordon (brother in-law) used his metal detector looking for riches. Only found
old metal. But then again they had fun. When I got home I rested for two hours as my hip and knee were stressed from the
walk. Remember to rest daily. I do, so I can function the rest of the day.    Janice, Vice President

A ROUGH ROAD
by Patrick J. Bird

I have just finished reading a book sent to me by Patrick J. Bird. This is his story
after polio while being away from home as a small child and placed in a
reconstruction home far from him family.

I found his writing to be very touching. For some it will take you back about how it
feels to be locked away from all you know and the pain of being alone at his young
age. Scared and placed in a room by himself he must learn to rely on the nurses and
doctors for all his needs.

Having had polio myself at the age of four and placed in a hospital. I can tell you I
could relate to this story. However I was never left alone by family as he was.

Quote; "A Rough Road is a testament to the capability of children to overcome the
most difficult of times."
You can get this book on line for $10.45.
At Fort Clinch I used my scooter. It was too much for me to walk. They have handicapped bathrooms and
the walkway was ruff but I enjoyed the fort and outing.
